25 AÑOS DEL MUNDO LOCO! When I started "Los Dug Dug's Homepage" (I cringe when I see that name now!) on July 31, 1997, I didn't think anyone would see it in Mexico, let alone the man with the one name listed on all those records I'd found. That part of the story is one you surely know if you've read this far and I've told it a million times by now, so for this special 25th anniversary message, I feel it far better of me to reflect on what was then, and what is now.
When Armando Nava and I first crossed paths, his band was still severely underappreciated in Mexico. I could tell they were clearly struggling at the time, which now seems all the more reason for Armando to reach out to me as he did. Someone cared enough to make a website for him, and he knew it was as much in his interests to be involved as it was for me to build it. So I solved the mystery of Los Dug Dug's and in the process we made El Mundo Loco into the first significant website devoted to a Mexican rock band, taking it further than I even imagined I'd ever take it in the end.
And indeed, this past quarter century has seen Los Dug Dug's slowly but surely take over the entire world wide web, and I do not hesitate to admit that if I were to stumble across them for the first time today, it might not even be in a Mexican record shop and I sure as heck wouldn't have to start a website to track them down! What a pity that would have been, for I would never have known the wondrous adventure they led me on. My stepping down as their webmaster in 2010 only paved the way for their legend to grow further in more capable hands than mine. Jose Peña and his crew have astounded me with their incredible Facebook page on the band, a treasure trove of ultra-rare memorabilia that continues to amaze.
And now we're hearing "Let's Make It Now" in ads for UberEats and "Lost In My World" and "Smog" in the soundtrack of HBO's "Narcos" series. Their old albums are finally being reissued on vinyl in Mexico, with "El Loco" being repressed for the first time ever (on glorious gold wax too). They're playing more and more shows in America and winning new fans every time. A new "classic lineup" has emerged combining members from the "Smog" and "El Loco" lineups (I couldn't believe my eyes when almighty "Smog" drummer Daniel Tello rejoined!). There's even a brand new song from Armando, his first new recording in decades, a collaboration with Esteban Gomez-Gonzalez on a lovely tune called "Mala Gente." (Click below to hear it!) And soon, lord willing, there will be a full-length documentary in which the keeper of this very website will appear alongside a who's who of VIPs in the life of the band. And yes, there is now finally an official Dug Dug's website too. None of these things seemed possible 25 years ago, but here we are now!
I humbly acknowledge that I'm greatly respected and held in high esteem throughout the Dug Dug's online and offline communities. I consider it one of my greatest honors in life to be considered part of the band's long history, and am proud that my work has been remembered so fondly. And I have to say that last year was one of the best and most incredible years in my entire history with the band and this website. I participated in the forthcoming documentary and dined with Armando not once but twice -- first in NYC during the filming of the documentary, then in Orlando, Florida on my birthday -- and it brought me back into the big picture with a bang! And did I ever think I'd end up watching their glorious Avandaro 50th Anniversary show live on my big-screen TV?
We've come a loooooong way, folks! 25 years since I brought this amazing band to life on the web, and they still ain't done yet. Here's to you, Armando Nava, and all the great music -- and life-affirming experiences -- you have brought into my world. Thank you more than you will ever know, and may you keep rockin' for years to come!
This Dug Dug's news update is dedicated in loving memory of original lead guitarist Gustavo Garaizar, who passed away on December 3rd, 2021. Rest in peace, amigo.
