I MARRIED A DUG DUG
by MARGARET DE LA TORRE WILKEY
We returned to Mexico City and things went back to the way they were before, with Jorge playing, practicing and drinking, staying out late again and leaving me alone more and more. The other guys knew what was happening but would never say anything to me, though they did make sure I was alright. Christmas came, and of course there wasn't any money to buy presents, except for Jorgie. I tried to make my first turkey, a present from some girl that one of the band members knew. I remember putting it into the oven and a flock of girls coming over to see the boys, including a Mexican girl for Jorge. They opened the oven door and started laughing, and talking about my turkey. As I remember, they took it out and restuffed it, to make it more to their liking. Mostly I sat alone back in our room, and just laid there with Jorgie. I started to miss my family. I wanted most of all to show our baby off.
On the eve of 1967, the band was asked to play for the President of Mexico. The President's son was a big fan of the Dug Dug's, and so they were invited to the Presidential Palace. I stayed with a friend that Jorge picked out for me. She was an American and had her whole family there. I think her father was the American consul to Mexico. They had a beautiful home overlooking the lights of Mexico City. I sat outside for quite awhile wondering how the night was going for the band. I wanted so much to share in their success. Actually, I just wanted to be with Jorge. The funny thing is, I didn't really feel sorry for myself. I knew he would be coming home to me, and our baby. The hours ticked away and finally at about 5 in the morning, he came and picked us up. and took me back home. He had been drinking a lot and he wanted to argue. That night we had perhaps our most violent argument yet.
By early 1967 the "Chicotito Si" single was selling well, the magazines were following them around with cameras, and they were giving endless interviews. Armando came home one day, and announced that they would be making a movie with Angelica Maria, "Cinco de Chocolate y Una De Fresa." They were thrilled beyond belief. Here were these small town boys, making a movie with one of the most popular entertainers in Mexico. We were all on cloud nine. Armando was busy getting the music together, the boys were busy getting themselves mentally prepared.
The first day they went to the movie studio, they were nervous, excited and very much looking forward to their newfound fame. They dressed very carefully the first morning and were up and ready to go. Jorge was in a good mood, and I kissed him goodbye and off they went. They came home at about 2 in the morning, exhausted. This went on for several days. I actually heard through someone that Genaro was having an affair with Angelica Maria. She was very sweet and very beautiful, and Genaro had a certain charm about him -- and besides, his reputation as being quite the stud preceded him.and sweet little Angelica just picked up on it. I never met her, but really only heard great things about her.
While we were living at the Hotel Majestic Jorge and I had another falling out, and again I took off to my friend's apartment. It seemed like I should have started paying rent because Jorgie and I had a regular little place there. She was a good friend to me and my son, I wish I could remember her name. During this time I met a new friend, Guillermo Soto, a drummer. He was tall, blond, blue eyed, and came from a very wealthy family. He fell madly in love with me at first sight. I was never drawn to him that way, but enjoyed the attention and kindness he showed me and my son. He actually took Jorgie and I out to eat bought us things we needed, such as clothes for Jorgie who was now 6 months old, and food. What a nice guy he was. Why couldn't I be attracted to this guy? But oh no, I was crazy in love with this wild haired, short, funny little guy named La Borrega. I would walk down the street with Guillermo and see pictures on magazines of the Dug Dug's, posters of them on buildings, hear their music playing in stores and restaurants. My heart and mind were always with them.
After just a few days Guillermo took me to meet his mother, with my son in tow. What a beautiful home they lived in. She was very gracius, but I knew she was not happy with her son's choice of a girlfriend. She spoke good English, as did Guillermo. I tried to show him some kind of appreciation for all he did for us, but he took it as much more. I knew I would not ever care for him the way he wanted, but really wanted to be his friend. In a week's time, Jorge found me and poured on the tears, the begging, the same routine as last time. I of course went with him. Knowing that Guillermo would be coming soon to pick me up, Jorge and I made a very quick escape. We went back to our hotel room, and made up with the usual passion, and that very day, I knew I became pregnant.
